- Walt Disney is an example of how a poor citizen of our
- nation can rise to great wealth. Yet, more importantly, he
- is an example of how one through applying his inate talents
- can contribute to the well being of his society. Born to a
- poor family, early in his life Walt was required to work in
- order to help the family survive. He spent many hours as a
- paper carrier, often trudging through deep snow drifts that
- formed along his delivery route. Art was of great interest
- to Disney, an area in which he was personally talented. By
- diligent study and practice, he became a famous cartoonist.
- Mickey Mouse was his most famous cartoon creation. In
- his early form Mickey had a tail that was removed by Disney
- after negative comments from the viewing audience. Mickey,
- of course, became a mouse without a tail. Despite his fame
- as a pioneer in cartoon related work, Disney contributed to
- many advances in motion picture technology. These included
- the areas of sound, color, and film photography. Many view
- his insight into the needs of family entertainment as being
- his most lasting achievement. Disney designed and operated
- amusement parks that appealed to all members of the family.
